There was a risk that animals might chew through the cables
In total, according to the carrier's authorities, 132 hamsters were transported by Airbus A321neo aircraft. By remaining inside the machine, they threatened the safety of the return flight. Animals could, for example, chew through electrical cables.
Data from the TAP passenger airline show that the cargo, apart from hamsters, also included, among others: domestic ferrets and birds, ordered from one of the pet stores in Ponta Delgada. TAP is the largest Portuguese passenger carrier.
