A five-year-old boy saved his father's life by notifying neighbors when the man lost consciousness. The Czech services informed about the intervention, praising the five-year-old's reflexes and organizing a special event especially for him.

The Liberec Region Emergency Service (ZZSLK) reported the boy's heroic act on Wednesday. At the end of October, five-year-old Matyáš “was alone at home with his father, who suddenly lost consciousness,” ZZSLK reported on social media. However, the boy was unable to call for help himself by phone. “Without hesitation, he immediately ran to the neighbors and they called 155 (Czech emergency medical services telephone – ed.),” we read.

“Matyáš responded immediately, on time and in an exemplary manner. Thank you and we highly approve!” – emphasized in the entry. Medical services appreciated the five-year-old by giving him a special sticker “I helped save a human life” and inviting him to the air base, where he had the opportunity to see, among other things, a rescue helicopter. The services also published several photos from his visit, which he attended with his mother.

Rules of first aid

“When someone's life or health is at risk, every moment is important,” emphasize the authors of the message on the website of the Polish Ministry of Health and the National Health Fund. It contains the most important information regarding the rules of first aid:

  • Assess the injured person's and your own safety. If the place is dangerous, call emergency numbers and try to evacuate the injured person to a safe place.
  • Assess the injured person's condition and consciousness. Ask what happened. If the injured person hears you and responds, he or she is conscious. If there is no contact with him, place him in the recovery position.
  • Open the airway. Place one hand on the victim's forehead and the other on his chin and tilt his head back. Remove visible foreign bodies from the mouth.
  • Assess breathing. Place your cheek against the injured person's face. Do you feel the exhaled air on your cheek, see your chest move? The injured person is breathing. If he is not conscious but breathing, place him in the recovery position.
  • Call 999 or 112 for help.
  • Perform CPR and use a defibrillator if you find one nearby.
