Syria. Overthrow of the Assad regime. Donald Tusk comments

Syrian rebels announced on Sunday morning capturing the capital of the country, Damascus and the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, who had held authoritarian power over this country for 24 years.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the situation in Syria, writing on social media: “The events in Syria have once again made the world realize, or at least they should, that even the cruelest regime can fall and that Russia and its allies can be defeated.”

Islamist rebels from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and their allies launched a campaign against the regime's troops on November 27. On Sunday, the Syrian army command announced that Assad's authoritarian rule had come to an end after the success of the rebels' lightning offensive, as a result of which they also occupied the capital of Syria with virtually no resistance from government troops on the night from Saturday to Sunday.

Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Gazi al-Jalali said that as of Saturday evening, the whereabouts of Assad and Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas were unknown. Assad, who has suppressed all forms of dissent and put thousands of people in prison, flew out of Damascus on Sunday to an unknown destination.
