This is no longer a crisis, this catastrophe demographic. Last year was another year with a significant population decline. There were over 130,000 fewer Poles than at the end of 2022. This means that for every 10 thousand the population decreased by 34 people – according to Central Statistical Office data describing the demographic situation in our country. Last year may be a symbolic beginning of great problems that await Poland.

According to forecasts, by 2060 the population of Poland will decrease by 6.7 million people

“The decline in the number of births recorded in 2023 confirms that Poland has entered a period of another demographic crisis (which already occurred temporarily in 1997-2007), but the current one may probably be a longer-term trend,” we read in the report. Central Statistical Office-at.

Forecasts show that by 2060 the population of Poland will decrease by 6.7 million people compared to 2023. The demographic crisis will be fueled primarily by high mortality. In 2060, the number of deaths is expected to be nearly 490,000.

“This will be a consequence, among other things, of the fact that the demographic age of the 1980s, i.e. people around 40, will systematically reach the age of highest mortality. Meanwhile, the current 20-year-olds will begin to reach retirement age. Median The age of the population will be over 50.25 years, which is about 7 years more than in 2023, which means that half of the inhabitants of Poland will be over 50 years old,” we read in the Central Statistical Office report.

Poland will face a crisis unless the fertility rate increases

Another baby boom could protect us from demographic collapse. However, taking into account predictable factors, an increase in the number of births is unlikely. The Central Statistical Office assumes that the number of births in 2060 will be relatively low – approximately 225,000. I'm talking about children mothers who are now little girls.

“The process of population aging perceived in the individual and social dimensions poses difficult challenges with a multi-dimensional dimension, not only in the economic sphere, but also in the psychological, medical and social sphere. Poland, for which the forecasts are currently unfavorable, will have to face all the problems resulting from unfavorable demographic trends,” predicts the Central Statistical Office.
