A record small amount of ice in the Arctic Ocean. “I don't have much hope at the moment”

Another alarming information about the state of our planet. The American snow and ice data center predicts that sea ice has already reached its maximum range in the Arctic Ocean this season and is the least in the history of measurements. This is a bad trailer for the increase in the risk of extreme weather phenomena.

So little ice has been in the Arctic Ocean for almost 50 years since its range is measured.

– It is really important in all this that we do not return to the conditions that we saw a few decades ago. We follow the road to a smaller amount of sea ice. And the fact that we have another “record” year, of course, will go to the top information services. And rightly so, but the most important thing in all of this is that we are going to completely lose ice in the Arctic Ocean in the summer. This has not been for hundreds of thousands of years – says Julienne Stroeve from the American National Snow and Ice data Center.

According to the US snow and ice data center, the range of sea ice probably reached its maximum level this season and is over a million 300,000 square kilometers less than the average from 1981-2010.

– And if one part of the climate system and one part of the Earth changes faster than the others, then the rest of the system must react somehow. There are many studies that have associated with what is happening in the Arctic, with the influence of extreme weather phenomena. It is usually manifested by blocking specific atmospheric phenomena in one area for a long time. This, for example, leads to extreme heat waves, drought disasters or to huge floods – explains Julienne Stroeve.

The US has stopped taking care of the climate

Insufficient efforts in terms of climate protection do not herald the reversal of this course. The average earth temperature is still rising. As a result, the glaciers melt, the snow cover shrinks and the frosting range decreases.

– I don't have much hope at the moment. This is partly due to the fact that the new American administration withdraws many environmental products and greenhouse gas reduction. This is, of course, disturbing, because the United States is a key player. And other countries could say: “Well, look – the United States does nothing, why should we do something?” And we really need all countries to take action and drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We all have to do it now, we can't wait. This is really our last decade to take action. If we do not do this, we will be condemned to such a level of insulation that can cause unstable conditions for many people in different parts of the planet, 'emphasizes Julienne Stroeve.
