The office of Israeli Prime Minister Bernjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday morning that an agreement with Palestinian Hamas on the release of hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip had been reached. The agreement is to be approved by the Israeli cabinet on the same day.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Qatar Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani said the agreement would enter into force on Sunday if the Israeli cabinet approves it. However, Netanyahu then noted that the final details of the agreement were still being negotiated.

On Thursday, he adjourned a cabinet meeting on the matter, accusing Hamas of “trying to force concessions at the last minute.”

According to the media, Hamas declared that it would abide by the agreement, but tried to add some of its members to the list of Palestinian prisoners scheduled for release. According to Israeli media, representatives of Israel, Hamas, the US and Qatar signed the agreement in the capital of Qatar, Doha.

Ceasefire Agreement

The first information about the agreement between Israel and Hamas appeared in the media on Wednesday. Shortly thereafter, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Sani confirmed the reports. As Reuters emphasized at the time, the agreement could end the conflict in the Middle East that has been going on for 15 months.

The Prime Minister of Qatar also announced at the conference in Doha that the first stage of the agreement will last 42 days and will include a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the east, away from populated areas. He stressed that compliance with the agreement will be supervised by Qatar, Egypt and United States.

According to Reuters, which has seen a copy of the agreement document, the first stage concerns access to humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip and the release of Israeli and Palestinian hostages. The total number released by Israel will depend on the number released by Hamas, the agency said. It may be from 990 to 1,650 people. After the living hostages are released, the bodies of the dead are also to be handed over.
