The Belgian airspace was temporarily closed due to the failure of the local air traffic control system – Belga press agency said on Thursday. As a result, no plane can currently land or start at the country's main airports.

A spokesman for the Skeyes Air Traffic Control Agency announced that around 15:00 local time it became clear that the system “does not work properly”.

A representative of the agency added that all aircraft operating in airspace controlled by Skeyes – up to a height of about 7500 meters – were redirected to neighboring countries.

The Brussels Airport also informed about the problems. “Due to the technical problems, the Air Traffic in Belgium is currently disturbed. We have no idea how long it will take” – it was informed on social media.
