Average spending on Christmas in 2024 will amount to PLN 1,460 – according to the BIG InfoMonitor study. It was added that despite inflation, 47 percent of respondents do not intend to give up any Christmas expenses.
The authors of the study emphasize that average expenses remained at the same level, but the analysis of individual categories of expenses indicates significant changes.
This is how much we will spend on Christmas
PLN 542 will be spent on the purchase of gifts, which means an increase of 4%. compared to 2023. The cost of food will be slightly lower – on average PLN 518. In this case, however, the amount decreased by 2% compared to last year.
At the same time, the number of people who give up buying gifts has increased. In 2024, 16 percent made such a declaration. respondents, which means an increase of 4 percentage points compared to 2023.
According to the study, 47 percent respondents do not plan to give up any of their current Christmas expenses, despite inflation. People who decide to save money most often intend to reduce their budget for gifts and Christmas meals – 28% each. “These results indicate an increase in the thriftiness of Poles, but at the same time they may affect the quality of the Christmas experience in many homes,” the publication wrote.
Fewer holiday gatherings
It was emphasized that the difficult financial situation forces more and more people to limit the scale of holiday gatherings. This year's Christmas Eve is expected to be spent in a smaller group than last year by 15 percent of people. subjects. For 65 percent the holidays will be similar to the previous ones. At the same time, 32 percent Poles declared that they expected more modest, less lavish holidays, and 3 percent assumes that they will be more impressive than last year.
The study also shows that 46 percent people buying Christmas gifts do so at least three months in advance. Another 8 percent plans this activity in the last days before Christmas Eve.
– We observe that Poles' Christmas shopping decisions are becoming more and more conscious and adapted to the budgetary possibilities of households. The increase in the percentage of people giving up gifts and the growing popularity of early expense planning are signals of the growing need to rationalize costs, said Sławomir Grzelczak, president of BIG InfoMonitor, quoted in the press release.

How 44 percent was transferred respondents buy Christmas gifts exclusively or mainly online, and 29 percent respondents choose to shop in stationary stores. It was added that 72 percent Poles intend to cover Christmas expenses from current funds, and 16 percent will reach for savings. 4% of people plan to take out a loan or a loan. subjects.
Every third Pole expects to feel the negative effects of holiday spending in the coming months. 23% of people will feel it for a maximum of a month. respondents, another 12 percent for 2-3 months, and 4 percent from 4 to 6 months.
The study “Poles' Christmas expenses” was carried out using the CAWI method by Quality Watch on behalf of BIG InfoMonitor, on a sample of 1,061 Poles over 18 years of age on December 6-9, 2024.
