Nearly 40 beaches in the state of Sao Paulo, in the southeast of Brazil, have been closed by sanitary and epidemiological services due to water contamination by viruses. According to local media, hospitals are overflowing with sick tourists.
By Monday, sanitary and epidemiological services had closed more than 20 percent of beaches in the state of Sao Paulo. These are – as local media note – very popular swimming areas during the summer season that started in December in this country. As established by Vanguard television, research shows the contamination of coastal waters with enteric viruses. The spread of viruses in water is explained by experts by the mass influx of tourists to the state of Sao Paulo during the holiday season, as well as intense rainfall and leaks in the water supply and sewage system in the region.
Tourists with vomiting and diarrhea
The Folha de S. Paulo daily expects that as the influx of tourists continues, more bathing areas will be closed.
The newspaper notes that numerous infections among holidaymakers are reflected not only in overcrowded hospitals in Sao Paulo, but also in tourists complaining of vomiting and diarrhea after returning from holidays spent in this state.
