Why suddenly navigation in the Baltic Sea? Why has been going on GPS for a year and a half? Scientists from Gdynia decided to look at this matter. They already know that disturbances come from Russia – from the Królewiec region, where Russian soldiers are stationed.

Fishermen from the Hel Peninsula were enveloped in electronic fog. – We flow out and all navigation does not work. Everything on the wheelhouse goes crazy, squeaks – says Przemysław Gierczak, Szyper Kutra.

GPS receivers indicate unreal positions. – There were such situations, for example, that we went out into the sea and one unit was somewhere in Saudi Arabia, and the other abroad abroad, and the third somewhere on the spit – says Przemysław Gierczak.

More than once fishermen had to interrupt the fishing and swim to the shore in the blindfold. Incidents with satellite navigation are also recorded by the largest Polish ports. – They lasted from several minutes to 24 hours. In such situations, sea pilots usually refuse to enter a large ship to the port – says Kalina Gierblińska from the city port in Gdynia.

GPS disruptions appeared on the Baltic over a year and a half ago. Scientists from the Maritime University of Gdynia became interested in them. – We could expect the sources from behind our eastern border. It was very likely, but not obvious – says Dr. Capt. Ż.W. Jarosław Cydajko from the Department of Navigation of the Maritime University of Gdynia.

The source of disturbances is in the Królewiec region

With the support of the Maritime Office and colleagues from the University of Colorado, they built a measuring system based on special antennas. They set them up in several locations on the Gulf of Gdańsk. With very high accuracy they measured the time in which disturbances reach them, which allowed to estimate the distance. On this basis, they calculated navigation curves. At the place of their intersection, a source of interference is likely.

– We got our effect. The next step in identification, i.e. the location of those places from which it is broadcast – indicates Jarosław Cydajko.

It is an area in the Russian Królewiec region, located about 20 kilometers north of Bałtijsk, near the town of Pokrowskoje. The 341 of the Russian army's radio struggle is stationed there. In satellite photos you can also see an installation with a characteristic mast in the seaside settlement Okuniewo.

– What the Russians are doing now in the Królewiec region is exactly the same as they do on Ukraineonly the scale is different – says Konrad Muzyka, military expert and director of the company “Rochan Consulting”.

Poland is defending itself against this electronic subversive. – We have tools to run the so -called navigation assist, i.e. the ship can always ask about its position – indicates Jan Młotkowski from the Maritime Office in Gdynia.

There are also other electronic positioning systems, independent of satellites. GPS interference is a potential risk, but above all a huge nuisance in the air and at sea. In the 21st century, sailors must again reach for methods from the time when the course was indicated by the stars, not a radio signal flowing from space.
