In Ostrava, on the other hand, a damaged flood embankment flooded one of the city's districts. Here are five things you should know on Tuesday, September 17.

1. Nysa residents fight for a flood embankment

The residents of Nysa fought shoulder to shoulder with the services on the night from Monday to Tuesday to prevent their city from being flooded. They reinforced the embankment at the Kościuszko Bridge with sandbags and even paving stones. They have to hold it so that the water does not flood the streets.

2. Open flood polder near Wrocław

The flood wave on the Odra reaches Oława and will soon be in Wrocław. On Monday evening, it exceeded the level of 620 centimetres on the water gauge in Brzeg and a decision was made to open the Oława-Lipki flood polder.

Senior Captain Michał Wójtowicz, press officer of the district State Fire Service in Oława, told tvn24.pl that two villages – Stary Górnik and Stary Otok – will probably be at least partially under water within a dozen or so hours. From the village of Stary Górnik, “only two families” decided to evacuate.

3. The key reservoir received water from the Odra River

The Racibórz Dolny reservoir, which began receiving water from the Odra on Sunday morning, may provide protection for residents of the Opole region and Lower Silesia against the approaching water.

The Regional Water Management Board in Gliwice reported that by 4 p.m. the reservoir had sheared the Odra flood wave, taking in approximately 108 million cubic meters of water.

4. Topola reservoir destroyed. Paczków flooded

In the lower part of Paczków, the lower part of Kozielno and the lower part of Stare Paczków – following damage to the Topola reservoir on the Nysa Kłodzka – an absolute evacuation was ordered.

– No one can guarantee us that this overflow will not widen, that a greater mass of water will not flow into the Kozielno reservoir. I kindly ask residents to report the need to evacuate, and where it is possible to leave their homes without contact with water – appealed the mayor of Paczków, Artur Rolka.

5. The Odra River floods Ostrava in the Czech Republic

In Ostrava, a flood embankment was damaged, water flowed towards one of the city's districts and flooded it, local media reported. This Czech city is located about 35 kilometers from the border with Poland. The rupture occurred at the confluence of two large rivers: the Odra and the Opava.

Through this breach in the embankments, water poured into the Przivoz district, from where 530 people were evacuated. The houses of the flood victims are standing in water that in some places reaches two meters, and it threatened not only apartment blocks, because Przivoz and neighboring districts are the industrial heart of Ostrava – there is a coking plant, chemical plant and a heat and power plant.
