The body of Alex Dancyg and five other hostages has been brought to Israel, the Israeli army said. Dancyg was kidnapped on October 7, 2023 by Hamas. The first reports that the 75-year-old was dead appeared in March.
Six bodies of hostages kidnapped to the Gaza Strip by terrorist Hamas on October 7, 2023 were brought to Israel on Tuesday morning, the Israeli army announced, confirming media reports.
These are the bodies of Nadav Popplewell, Yaghev Bukhstav, Joram Matzeger, Haim Peri, Avraham Munder and Alex Dancyg, the Israeli army said in a post on the X website.
“The action was made possible by accurate intelligence information from the ISA, intelligence units and the IDF Intelligence Directorate Headquarters,” the statement said.

Born in Warsaw in 1948 to Holocaust survivors, Dancyg was a Polish and Israeli citizen. In 1957, he moved to Israel with his parents, where he joined the kibbutz movement, served in the army, and later graduated with a degree in history. Since 1990, he has worked at the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem, which is dedicated to cultivating the memory and educating about the Jewish Holocaust.

Dancyg and his entire kibbutz Nir Oz maintained good neighborly relations with the Gaza Arabs. He always believed that peace on the Israeli-Palestinian border was possible. On October 7, after the massacre on the kibbutz, he was kidnapped by Hamas.
In July, the Israeli army confirmed the deaths of two hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip: Alex Dancyg and Yaghev Bukhstav, who were most likely held together near the city of Khan Yunus and died there several months ago.
The Israeli military assessed in early August that over time the likelihood of obtaining intelligence information about the hostages would increase and the chances of survival of those kidnapped would decrease.
During the Hamas terrorist attack on southern Israel, almost 1,200 people were killed and 251 were kidnapped. In Kibbutz Nir Oz, a massacre took place, in which many residents lost their lives or were kidnapped. In retaliation, Israel attacked the Gaza Strip, where about 40,000 people have died so far and a humanitarian catastrophe is taking place there.
