Iłowa. Bottles with white phosphorus at the stadium. They were smoking from time to time

After more than a month after digging the first bottles with white phosphorus at the construction of the stadium in Iłów (Lubuskie Voivodeship), they were deported. In total, 28 were found.

In Iłowa (Lubuskie Voivodeship), on February 7, the excavator operator dug three mysterious bottles at the construction of the stadium. As it turned out, there was white phosphorus inside. This powder is burned after connecting to the air. The fire brigade and the army were called in. It was then found that the found substances were not a remnant after World War II. The obligation to remove it fell on the commune.

Smoke appeared several times

The phosphorus lay on the pitch for over a month. From time to time there was a spontaneous arson, after which children from the neighboring school were evacuated.

On Tuesday, the bottles were secured and taken away. – On the spot, it turned out that apart from three bottles, which was secured by the fire brigade on the first day in a plastic container, the company extracted 25 bottles with this dangerous phosphorus. I hope that these were the last bottles at this stadium, because the work will last more than a year. I hope that we will not dig anything similar at the stadium – says Paweł Lichtanski, the mayor of Iłowa.

The found material was secured. He will go to the garbage incineration plant in Dąbrowa Górnicza.

The municipality is counting on reimbursement

The cost of securing and utilizing phosphorus is over PLN 120,000, which the commune had to spend. – We will try to recover this money. We asked the Lubuskie voivode two weeks ago to launch the reserve of the Treasury. I hope that after paying this invoice we will be able to recover this money simply in a few weeks – said Lichtanski.

In the place where the buried bottles were found, land samples for analysis were taken. It is to show whether soil pollution has occurred.
