IMWM issued first and second degree alerts. Forecasters warn of heavy snowfall, strong winds, as well as snowstorms and blizzards. Roads may be icy in parts of the country. Check where the weather will be dangerous.

Forecasters from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) issued first- and second-degree warnings on a three-level, increasing scale.

Second degree IMWM warnings – strong wind

Orange alerts against strong winds apply in the following voivodeships:

  • West Pomeranian Voivodeshipin the following counties: Kamień, Gryfice, Koszalin, KoszalinSławno;
  • Pomeranianin the following counties: Słupsk, SłupskLębork, Wejherowo, Puck.

In these regions, strong winds with an average speed of up to 65 km/h, gusts of up to 95 km/h, from the west and north-west are forecast. Thunderstorms and a storm in the Baltic Sea are also possible. The warnings will be in force until 2 a.m. on Saturday.

First degree IMWM warnings – strong wind

There is also strong wind in the following voivodeships:

  • Pomeranianin the following counties: Kwidzyn, Sztum, Malbork and Nowy Dwór;
  • Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship;
  • Podlasiein the following counties: Suwałki, SuwałkiSejny, Augustów, Moniecki, Grajewo, Kolno, Łomża, Łomża;
  • Masovian Voivodeshipin northern and north-western counties;
  • Łódźin the northern half of the voivodeship;
  • Greater Polandoutside the extreme southern counties;
  • Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship;
  • Lubuskie.

Strong winds with an average speed of up to 40 km/h and gusts of up to 75 km/h are forecast to occur from the west and south-west. Thunderstorms are also possible.

In the following voivodeships: Lubusz, Greater Poland, Kuyavian-Pomeranian and Warmian-Masurian, the warnings will be valid until 22 on Friday. In Mazovia, the Łódź region and Podlasie, the alarms will be in force until midnight on Saturday.

First degree IMWM warnings – icing

First degree anti-icing alerts apply in the following voivodeships:

  • Lubuskieoutside the extreme northern counties;
  • Greater Polandoutside northern counties;
  • Lower Silesiaoutside southern and eastern counties;
  • Opole Province;
  • Łódź;
  • Silesianoutside the extreme southern counties;
  • Świętokrzyskie;
  • Lesser Polandoutside southern counties;
  • Podkarpackieoutside southern counties;
  • Lublin Province;
  • Masovian Voivodeshipoutside northern counties;
  • Podlasieoutside northern counties.

It is forecast that wet road surfaces and sidewalks will freeze after sleet and wet snow, causing them to become icy. The warnings will be valid until 23 on Friday.

First degree IMWM warnings – heavy snowfall

Dangerous weather associated with snowfall will occur in the following voivodeships:

  • West Pomeranian Voivodeshipin the following counties: Koszalin, Koszalin, Sławno;
  • Pomeranianin the following counties: Bytów, Słupsk, Słupsk, Lębork, Wejherowo, Puck, Kartuzy, Gdynia, Sopot, GdańskGdańsk, Nowy Dwór;
  • Warmian-Masurian Voivodeshipin the following counties: Elbląg, ElblągBraniewskie.

Snowfall is forecast in the mentioned regions, causing the snow cover to increase by approximately 10 cm in places. Strong winds may also cause snowstorms locally.

The alarms will be in force from 11 p.m. on Friday until 7 a.m. on Saturday.

First degree IMWM warnings – snowstorms/blizzards

Yellow snowstorm/blizzard alerts have been issued for the following voivodeships:

  • Lower Silesiacounties: Lwówek, Karkonosze, Jelenia GóraKamienna Góra, Kłodzko;
  • Silesiancounties: Bielsko, Bielsko-BiałaCieszyn, Żywiec;
  • Lesser Polandcounties: Sucha, Nowy Targ, Tatra, Myślenice, Limanowski, Nowy Sącz, Nowy SączGorlice.

Blizzards and snowstorms are forecast there, caused by snowfall and wind with an average speed of up to 35 km/h, with gusts of up to 65 km/h, from the west.

In Lower Silesia, the warnings will be valid until 11 on Saturday. In other regions, alerts will remain in force until 13 on Saturday.
