There was a significant temperature inversion in the Tatra Mountains on Friday morning, which means that it is warmer on the peaks than in the valleys or valleys. The second degree of avalanche danger applies. Rescuers warn that the trails are covered with fresh snow.

At Kasprowy Wierch on Friday at 8 a.m. the temperature was -0.8 degrees Celsius, while in Poronin -10.8 degrees Celsius was recorded – reported the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.

After several days of cloud cover and snowfall Tatra Mountains the sun was shining. According to the services of the Tatra National Park (TPN), in the higher parts of the mountains some trails are covered with fresh snow, so their course cannot be seen.

“The snow cover varies – in some places there are deep drifts, in others the snow is blown to the ice, especially near the ridge. Moving in the higher parts of the Tatra Mountains requires experience in winter mountain tourism, the ability to assess the local avalanche risk and adapt the route to the current conditions.” – warn TPN services.

In the Tatra Mountains, the second level of avalanche danger applies above 1,700 m above sea level. “The snow cover is generally well bonded, but on some steep slopes it is moderately bonded. Avalanche triggering is usually possible with a large additional load, especially on steep slopes indicated in the avalanche report. Spontaneous descent of very large avalanches is unlikely,” the release said. .

Those going on high-mountain expeditions must have winter tourist equipment, i.e. crampons, ice ax, helmet and ABC avalanche equipment. The lower-lying trails and access roads to the shelters are generally well cleared of snow or paved. When planning trips to the Tatra valleys, it is worth taking non-slip grips and poles with you. TPN appeals not to enter the surface of high-mountain lakes because the ice is thin in places and may break. This also applies to Morskie Oko.
