A three-month-old girl was taken to hospital with injuries that could indicate that she was a victim of violence. The baby could not be saved. A year after this tragedy, the prosecutor's office brings charges against the girl's grandmother. The 61-year-old faces up to life in prison. The woman pleads not guilty to the crimes she is accused of. Initially, the charges in this case were brought against the child's mother.
On October 22 last year, before 11 p.m., the doctor on duty at the Koło hospital informed the police that A three-month-old girl with injuries was admitted to the hospitalthat may have resulted from the use of violence against her. Due to the child's condition, he was transported to a specialist hospital in Poznań. Despite the doctors' efforts, the girl died in early November. Initially, the police arrested the child's parents in this case. The expert's preliminary opinion did not show that the girl's injuries were caused by beating. The child's then 21-year-old mother was charged with unintentionally causing serious bodily injury that was actually life-threatening.
The grandmother was charged with the girl's death
On Friday, the District Prosecutor's Office in Konin announced that after obtaining expert opinions and subsequent hearings, charges regarding the child's death were brought against the 61-year-old grandmother of the deceased girl. The woman took care of three-month-old Zosia and her two older siblings while their mother worked. – She abused all three of them – said prosecutor Ewa Woźniak. According to investigators, this abuse had been going on since March 2021. How was the 61-year-old supposed to “take care” of the infant? The prosecutor's office determined that the woman grabbed her granddaughter's hands, pressed her chest with excessive force, shook her, and hit her on the head and other parts of the body. Investigators also determined that in the period from several to several hours before the child was admitted to the hospital in Koło on October 22, 2023, the grandmother allegedly hit three-month-old Zosia in the head several times and hit her head on a hard, flat surface. These injuries resulted in the child's death on November 3 in a hospital in Poznań.
She pleaded not guilty
The woman was charged with child abuse and causing serious bodily harm resulting in death. – The suspect pleaded not guilty. She denied that such events had even occurred, said prosecutor Woźniak. Investigators also changed the charges brought against the mother of the deceased girl. – She knew that the grandmother took poor care of the children, and yet she left them in her care, which exposed them to a direct threat of loss of life and health – said prosecutor Woźniak. On Thursday, at the request of the prosecutor's office, the court imposed a three-month arrest on the suspected 61-year-old woman. The mother of the deceased girl faces up to five years in prison, and the arrested grandmother faces a sentence of five years to life in prison.
