Father Gużyński: It was these popes who could be more independent

Father Gużyński commented that Leon XIII was “a pope who had to find himself between wild capitalism and galloping socialism, and sought balance.” He assessed that “rerum novarum” is “an excellent, very important, groundbreaking encyclical”

– This pope (Leon XIV – ed.) Can deal with many important social issues, stand among other two poles, global south and a global north, and try to solve this conflict – said Father Gużyński.

Father Gużyński also drew attention to the religious origin of the new pope. Robert Prevost is an Augustian. – In the history of the Church, those popes who were religious always brought something very interesting to the papacy, because they could be more independent – he assessed. In his opinion, religious may be more flexible, not necessarily functioning in the vertical hierarchy of the Church.
