– A pope was elected who will continue the line of his predecessor, of course in his own way – said in a special issue of “Facts after facts” Father Jacek Prusak, commenting on the election of Pope Leon XIV. Father Paweł Gużyński paid attention to the religious origin of the new pope and determined what this influence on his pontificate could have.

Cardinal Robert Prevost from the USA became the new pope on Thursday, who took the name of Leon XIV. He announced the message about his choice after 19 from the balcony of the Basilica of Saint Peter, Cardinal Protodiakon Dominique Mamberti. Leon XIV is 69 years old and a long experience of ministry in Peru. Recently, he was a prefect of dicasteries for bishops. He was considered one of the papabili.

Guests of “Facts after Facts” – father Paweł Gużyński and priest Jacek Prusak – commented on the name that the new pope took, recalling the figure of Leon XIII – the last name of this name, the author of the encyclical “Rerum Novarum”, the first dedicated to social matters.

Father Gużyński: It was these popes who could be more independent

Father Gużyński commented that Leon XIII was “a pope who had to find himself between wild capitalism and galloping socialism, and sought balance.” He assessed that “rerum novarum” is “an excellent, very important, groundbreaking encyclical”

– This pope (Leon XIV – ed.) Can deal with many important social issues, stand among other two poles, global south and a global north, and try to solve this conflict – said Father Gużyński.

Father Gużyński also drew attention to the religious origin of the new pope. Robert Prevost is an Augustian. – In the history of the Church, those popes who were religious always brought something very interesting to the papacy, because they could be more independent – he assessed. In his opinion, religious may be more flexible, not necessarily functioning in the vertical hierarchy of the Church.

“I want to be a pope for everyone”

– A pope was elected who will continue the line of his predecessor, of course in his own way – said priest Jacek Prusak. – I think this is a pope who will represent those who do not see this world, because he saw them and lived in Peru – he added. He also noted that due to his nationality he may be able to conduct a dialogue with the American administration.

– Tears were visible before his eyes. I was wondering if he would extract the word. And he and spoke Italian and Spanish, which is also significant that he did not turn, for example in his native language, in English, but he only wanted to show solidarity with those with whom he was closest – commented the first words of Leon XIV, Fr. Jacek Prusak.

He noted that the new pope spoke a lot about bridges and dialogue, which makes the priest calmly. “He wants to be a pope for everyone,” he added.
