How could this message reach the world from France?”.

Describing the spectacle as “pathetic”, he cited fragments from John Paul II's book “Ecclesia in Europa” – including about the “loss of memory and Christian heritage” by the Old Continent and that “European culture gives the impression of the 'silent apostasy' of a man who has had his fill and lives as if God did not exist.”

Some groups perceived it as an insult to religious feelings, although those commenting on the event are not sure whether it was a reference to a scene from the Gospel or perhaps a painting by Leonardo da Vinci.
