The inhabitants of Peru are struggling with the effects of catastrophic floods and landslides caused by extreme rainfall. The destruction is extensive and also affected the capital of the country, Lima. On Wednesday, the Peruvian government announced a state of emergency in 157 districts.
Extremely heavy rainfall has been found in Peru since the beginning of February. The downpours led to the flood and landslide of the earth that affected many areas of the country. Serious destruction affected, among others, the capital of the country, Lima, and the southern areas of the ICA regions. In the city of Nazca, in the south, great water devastated many houses and crops, and also blocked some roads.
State of emergency
Due to the difficult situation, the Peruvian government introduced a state of emergency in 157 districts in 20 regions of the country. Services that could help residents fight the effects of the disaster still have not reached many places.
– There are families that cannot go to the other side because of the landslide. (…) Please, come quickly and save all the people who are trying to go to the other side of the street, exposing their lives in connection with the collapse of the houses – says one of the victims of the landslide cited by the Reuters agency.
At least until Friday, Lima and 19 regions of Peru were covered by orange warnings against heavy rainfall. The National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) warned that the downpours will be accompanied by wind gusts up to 40 km/h, which may be associated with additional threats in the form of landslides and mudslides.
