There are a lot of cats at the parish cemetery in Puławy (Lubelskie). In recent days, the manager found four dead animals. There was a suspicion that someone was poisoning them. The police were notified.
– Four dead cats have been found since Friday. The fifth one was in bad shape, drooling and shaking. We didn't manage to catch him, says Marzena Gembal, president of the “W dobre łapkach” Foundation.
He suspects that someone at the cemetery of the Divine Mercy Parish at Piaskowa Street in Puławy is probably poisoning cats.
Bowls and a black glove
– This would be indicated by the symptoms that the fifth one had. We also received a report from one of the grave visitors that she found bowls and a black glove in the cemetery. Which worried her because someone could use this glove to pour poison into the cats, says Gembal.
He adds that there are several dozen cats in the cemetery, maybe even around 40.
– There are those who feed them, but also, as you can see, those who want to poison them. To reduce the population, we intend to sterilize these animals, he notes.
They are to be put up for adoption
So far, the three youngest ones have been caught – two one-and-a-half-month-old cats and a five-month-old female cat.
– The cats were taken to a shelter run by the city council. They will be put up for adoption. The cat is here. We will look for a new home for her, says the president of the foundation.
The plan is to take the youngest cats and put them up for adoption, and sterilize the older ones and take them to the cemetery. – Two more cats will be sterilized this year from the city budget. We will collect money to take care of the remaining ones, says Gembal.
Cemetery manager: I don't know who you have to be to poison cats
The case of dead cats was reported to the police. – We hope that toxicological tests will be carried out to confirm that the animals were actually poisoned – says the president.
Commissioner Ewa Rejn-Kozak from the District Police Headquarters in Puławy informs that the police are already dealing with the case.
– We haven't had to deal with such situations before. I don't know who you have to be to poison cats. Anyone who doesn't like animals must also dislike people, the cemetery manager Stanisław Stankiewicz tells us bitterly.
