The Russian oppositionist died on February 16 in penal colony No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. According to the Investigative Committee's statement recently published by Yulia Navalnaya, the cause of the oppositionist's death was ““a group of disease complications”.
Doctors write to Putin about Navalny, demand investigation
Six months after his death, Russian doctors demanded that the Investigative Committee there initiation of proceedings against officers of the penal colony where an opponent of the government died – reported the independent portal Meduza.
“It is obvious that Alexei Navalny's death was a result of negligent performance of duties by employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service,” 97 doctors said in a joint letter.
According to doctors, the oppositionist should have been prescribed treatment for hypertension and banned from being placed in a prison cell.
“Alexei was not prescribed antihypertensive therapy – despite the existing medical contraindications, he was still regularly placed in solitary confinement, which ultimately led to (according to the presented message) to the development of such serious complications hypertension, such as pulmonary edema, cerebral edema, ventricular fibrillation,” Russian doctors said in an appeal.
“We have repeatedly drawn attention to the need to provide Alexei Navalny with access to qualified medical care and to the inadmissibility of placing Alexei in solitary confinement again. (…) Even if we assume that the cause of Alexei Navalny's death was not violence, you are responsible for it, because you ignored the opinion of medical experts on the threat to Alexei's life in the conditions of detention,” the doctors wrote.
