The issue that divides Americans. Joe Biden calls for gun control

A few days after the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump, in the middle of a very difficult election campaign, President Joe Biden is returning to a topic that is terribly divisive among Americans: the issue of restricting access to weapons, including, above all, automatic weapons.

– We must stand against gun violence. Help me get guns off our streets. This gun was used in the assassination of Donald Trump. This is a gun that has killed so many people, including children. It's time to ban it – says Joe Biden.

Joe Biden is referring to the AR-15, the most common weapon of choice for mass shooters. Although Donald Trump was shot, one person was killed, and two others were seriously injured, there is no support for any restrictions among Republicans.

“The problem is not guns. What happened to President Trump was the work of a madman who tried to take other people's lives,” said Bo Biteman, a delegate to the Republican convention from Wyoming.

– This isn't about guns. Guns don't kill. Crazy people kill. They could just as easily poison someone or stab someone. This is not the time to open up a discussion about access to guns. In this situation, the Secret Service agents are to blame. They are to blame, not the guns – says Stacey Feinberg, a delegate to the Republican convention from California.

Gun control advocates argue that an assault rifle can injure a large number of people in a blink of an eye. The right to bear arms is guaranteed to us by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Republicans say.

“We need our weapons to protect ourselves. These are times when we have to take care of ourselves and defend ourselves,” said Yvonne Clouser, a delegate to the Republican convention from Texas.

– I believe that without access to guns this country would not have existed at all. I wholeheartedly support the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees us this – comments Aj Yvette, a delegate to the Republican convention from Texas.

Since the beginning of this year, more than nine thousand people have died in shootings in the United States. Among the victims are 132 children and more than 600 teenagers.

For the right wing of America, these monstrous numbers prove that people simply do not know how to handle a gun. It is the man who has to pull the trigger. So if he is healthy, if he knows the law and his gun, then – as they assure – no one is in danger.

“People who are critical of gun owners or members of gun societies should first read the Second Amendment. Educate yourself. Learn more about it before you comment. You have to try it yourself. You have to learn. Fortunately, we are able to convince more and more people,” says Cheryle Rebholz, owner of a gun shop.

In June, for the first time in history, the U.S. Surgeon General declared that gun violence was a public health emergency.

“Any doctor, any nurse who has worked in a hospital and has treated patients with gunshot wounds will tell you that this is a national crisis. People are dying from preventable causes. They are showing up in emergency rooms every day, all across the country. That is the public health emergency,” said Vivek H. Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General.
