Residents of the northeastern US states have been facing a wave of intense snowfall since the beginning of the week. Snowstorms are the result of a phenomenon called the “lake effect.” In some places, the snow cover exceeded 60 centimeters.
A front carrying heavy snowfall has been moving over the northeastern regions of the United States since the beginning of this week. In some states of New York and Pennsylvania, there were warnings against the so-called “lake effect”, i.e. the appearance of strongly developed clouds carrying extreme rainfall. During this week, 650,000 people received snowstorm alerts.
Over half a meter of snow
The most white fluff fell, among others, in the village of Constableville, New York, where snow cover amounted to 61 centimeters. Blizzards also hit Boston, Martinsburg, Irving and West Falls.
The National Weather Service (NWS) announced in its latest announcement that the maximum temperature in New York on Thursday will be around -1 degrees Celsius. More light snowfall will occur in this region in the late afternoon and evening.
Frosts of several degrees
Forecasts indicate that a wave of frost will spread to the northern US states in the coming days. The NWS said that from Friday to Tuesday in the mountains and on the plains, temperatures may drop to as low as -34 degrees Celsius.
“This poses a high risk of hypothermia and frostbite on exposed skin. Wear the necessary clothing and accessories when moving,” the NWS appealed.
Frost will also reach southern areas, including the Ohio Valley and the Gulf of Mexico.
