According to sources in NATO countries, the headquarters of the planned Alliance mission, coordinating weapons supplies and training for the Ukrainian armed forces, will be located in western Germany in Wiesbaden, the dpa news agency reported on Friday.

Wiesbaden in Hesse is also the base of US forces in Europe, which until now has been responsible for coordinating aid. The mission is to be commanded by a general who will report directly to the commander-in-chief of the forces FOR THIS in Europe – wrote the dpa agency, citing sources in the Alliance countries.

She recalled that until now they were responsible for such tasks United States. At the end of 2022, they established a unit of approximately 300 soldiers called Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U) at the European headquarters of the US Armed Forces in Wiesbaden.

“The NATO project is also seen as a preventive measure in the event of Donald Trump's return to the US presidency in January 2025. The Republican's past statements raise doubts as to whether the US will continue to support Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia under his leadership,” dpa noted. “There are concerns within the Alliance that a political change of course in Washington may also affect the coordination of arms supplies and training activities for the Ukrainian armed forces,” it added.

Without the participation of Hungary

They will not take part in the new NATO mission Hungary. The government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban fears that this project may lead the Alliance to direct confrontation with Russia. “To ensure that Hungary does not prevent reaching the necessary consensus on the project, the country has been assured that it will not have to contribute either financially or personally,” dpa said.

The new project is now referred to within the Alliance as “NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine” (NSATU).

Further preparations for the implementation of this project can now be made on the basis of the agreed operational plan. “Ideally, it would be officially launched in July, when German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the other 31 heads of state and government of NATO countries meet for a summit in Washington,” dpa wrote.
