In Greece, dead fish are being collected after they piled up this week in the port of the tourist city of Volos in Thessaly, a mass kill that was caused by contact with seawater.
Hundreds of thousands of dead fish have washed into the Pagasetic Gulf, on which Volos is located, as floodwaters receded. Greece was hit last year by the powerful medican Daniel, causing widespread destruction and flooding in Thessaly, among other places.
Fish swept from their freshwater habitats in Lake Karla died immediately after contact with the saltwater in the bay. The floating dead fish have created a silver blanket in the bay in recent days. Dead animals also cover the beaches. An intense stench hangs over the port and surrounding areas. About 40 tons of fish have been removed so far.
Owners of tourist facilities fear that the situation will harm their businesses, which were already affected by the cyclone in 2023.
According to experts, the event does not pose a threat to public health, and the phenomenon itself is not new, wrote the eKathimerini portal.
