A 53-year-old man and his 10-year-old son were arrested in connection with the death of another 10-year-old in Sacramento, California. According to the local police, the detained boy allegedly pulled a gun from his father’s car and fatally shot the victim.

Just after 4:30 p.m. last Saturday, Sacramento County police officers received a report of a shooting. At the scene, they found an unconscious boy bleeding from his head and neck. Initial eyewitness accounts indicated that the victim was 13-14 years old and had been shot. “Sheriff’s deputies immediately began life-saving measures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, until fire department paramedics arrived on scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” the sheriff’s office reports. Already in the hospital, it turned out that the victim was only 10 years old.

The police learned from witnesses that “the person responsible for the shooting” ran into a nearby apartment. One adult and two minors were detained there. The adult arrested was identified as 53-year-old Arkete Davis, it said.

Based on witness interviews and collected evidence, homicide police officers determined the course of events. According to the release, one of the detained minors, a 10-year-old boy, was to go to his father’s (Davis) vehicle to get cigarettes. However, he took out a gun from inside and “bragged” about it. He then allegedly fired a single shot at the victim and fled to a nearby apartment.

In a nearby garbage bin, the police found the gun from which the shot was fired. The officers say that Davis (the father) probably threw it there. The office also said in a statement that the man had previously been legally prohibited from possessing firearms. Additionally, the found copy was reported stolen in 2017.

The 10-year-old was taken to a closed youth facility and charged with murder, the sheriff’s office reported. His father was booked into the county’s main jail, where he was charged with weapons and child endangerment charges. Bail was set at half a million dollars and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Wednesday.
