He ended his night drive on the lawn, almost running over a pedestrian. The man explained to the traffic police that in Germany he could drive after drinking beer. But he had certainly drunk much more. He brewed even more “beer” while trying to bribe.
On Sunday, a few minutes after midnight, the emergency number operator was notified by a pedestrian that he had taken the keys from a drunk driver on Libelta Street in Wągrowiec (Wielkopolska Province). A police patrol was immediately sent to the scene. According to the reporting party, he was walking down the street when suddenly the driver of the Toyota made a sharp turn, leaving the roadway. – The witness reported that he almost got hit – explains cadet Dominik Zieliński, press officer of the District Police Headquarters in Wągrowiec
The car stopped on a nearby lawn. The driver and passenger got out. Then the pedestrian took the keys out of the ignition, which he later handed to the police. Both the driver and the passenger were intoxicated.
They had fun at the wedding
Contact with them was difficult because they did not speak Polish. As it turned out, they were citizens Germanwho came to a wedding at a nearby hotel. They did not have any documents with them that would confirm their identity.
– The 26-year-old driver had approximately 1.42 per mille of alcohol at the time of the test. He explained to the traffic police that in Germany he could drive after drinking beer. The man was detained – Zieliński said. The man's drunk partner was also taken to the police station, because she initially admitted to driving the vehicle.
But that was not the end of the matter. – When the driver realized that things were taking an unfavorable turn for him, he decided to bribe the police – informed Zieliński.
On Monday, following explanations, the man's partner was released, while officers from the Office of International Police Cooperation confirmed the identity of the detained man.
He will answer in court
– The work of a police officer from the investigation team together with the District Prosecutor in Wągrowiec on explaining the circumstances of the case, questioning witnesses, but also securing evidence, including monitoring recordings and banknotes, allowed for the formulation and submission of an indictment to the court – explains Zieliński.
The man has been charged with two counts: driving while intoxicated and providing financial benefits in order to induce police officers to violate the law. He faces up to 10 years in prison. The prosecutor has imposed a ban on driving any motor vehicles in land traffic on the man.
