President German Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the Hungarian city of Sopron on Monday. During his trip abroad, Steinmeier met with his Hungarian counterpart Tamas Sulyok and called on the local authorities to maintain consistency in European Union.
He stressed the importance of a united EU position in supporting Ukrainy in the fight against the Russian Federation.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier stressed that the important role Hungarianwhich currently serve Presidency of the Council of the European Unionis to “strengthen unity in the EU and promote constructive common solutions to our future topics”. The politician, whose words are quoted by the Ukrainian branch of Deutsche Welle, added that hopes that Hungary “will accept and fulfil this role”.
Steinmeier further stressed the need to maintain a common position on aid for Ukraine. – We cannot leave any room for doubt that NATO and the EU are united in their support for Ukraine – said the German President.
It is worth noting that recently, German media reported that the government allegedly wants to introduce a ban on planning new spending on military aid for Kiev. At the time, they referred to a letter from Finance Minister Christian Lindner addressed on August 5 to Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. However, on Monday, the German Chancellor posted an entry online that contradicts media reports.
“Germany is and remains the largest supporter of Ukraine in Europe. We continue our support: a loan of EUR 50 billion, which we are launching together with the group G7” – he wrote Olaf Scholzadding that “this enables Ukraine to acquire weapons on a large scale.”

In July, quite a stir erupted over statements by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Politicians attacked Poland, accusing the government of hypocrisy.
Szijjarto assessed that, on the one hand, Warsaw “blames” Budapest for establishing trade relations with Moscowon the other hand, it supplies itself with energy resources from Russia. In turn, Orban claimed that our country is pursuing a “hypocritical policy”. – They criticize us for our relations with Russia, but they conduct business with Russia through intermediaries.
