On Friday morning, firefighters intervened at 8 Łucka Street in Warsaw's Wola district, where a 19th-century tenement house was illegally demolished last weekend. A fire broke out in an excavator standing on a rubble pile.
We received the first information and recording from the scene of the incident on Kontakt 24.
Junior Brigadier Janusz Maciejewski from the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Warsaw said that information about the fire was received around 5.30.
– Before our arrival, the police were already at the scene. The fire spread to the cabin and part of the excavator's engine. Two water currents were given. There were no injuries, the firefighter said. – After the fire was extinguished, the excavator was returned to the owner. The losses were estimated at approximately PLN 200,000, Maciejewski added.
Illegal demolition
The tenement house at 8 Łucka Street disappeared from the register of monuments by the decision of the General Conservator of Monuments. This is the result of the owner's actions, who sought to remove the facility from the register and the judgment of the Provincial Administrative Court in Warsaw, which provided the basis for this. Community activists and the authorities of Wola found this decision incomprehensible and applied to the Masovian Conservator of Monuments to re-protect part of the property.
The building at 8 Łucka Street is the oldest tenement house in Wola. The history of Abram Włodawer's tenement house dates back to the 19th century. It was built in 1878. It was one of the few in this part of the city that survived the tragedy of World War II.
On Saturday, when the demolition of the tenement house began, a construction supervision inspector appeared on site and ordered the work to be stopped. On Monday, this decision was ignored and the demolition was completed. The Masovian Provincial Conservator of Monuments notified the prosecutor's office about the case.
