The Capital Greenery Board wants to recreate the historic appearance of the dahlia garden in Skaryszewski Park. Officials are asking residents to search their home archives and find photos of this unique place from the past.
The dahlia garden in Skaryszewski Park was created in the 1920s, when the park area was expanded towards the north-east. Today, its remains constitute a characteristic grassy square on the hill closing the main avenue from the north. Thanks to city gardeners, dahlias will soon bloom again in this place.
The greenery management wants the recreated garden to resemble the one from the old days as much as possible. That's why I'm looking for historical photos of this place. Residents who find such photographs in their home archives can send them to the e-mail address ro8@zzw.waw.pl or on Facebook run by city gardeners.
Renovation in Skaryszewski Park
Skaryszewski Park is undergoing a metamorphosis. The main avenue has already been renovated and new lanterns – replicas of Warsaw pastorals – have been installed. The alley running along Kamionkowskie Lake and the children's playground were also renovated. By the end of the year, an automatic toilet will be made available at ul. Wiedza.
Skaryszewski Park is a historic area. It was built in the years 1905–1916 on the former meadows of the village of Skaryszew. It was designed by the then chief gardener of Warsaw, Franciszek Szanior. This place has been on the register of monuments since 1973.
In 2009, the park, named after Ignacy Jan Paderewski since the interwar period, was honored with the title of the most beautiful park in Poland and the third most beautiful park in Europe. There are 280 species of trees and shrubs growing there, and the greatest treasure are specimens from the original dendrological collection that have managed to survive to this day. These include, among others: Amur corknuts, hybrid horse-chestnut, bitter hickory, Caucasian wingnuts, American walnuts and several species of ash.
Particularly decorative are ancient Japanese magnolias, which are the main spring attraction of the park, when they are abundantly covered with beautiful white flowers.
