Most of the year we don't even think about the air humidity in our home. The problem appears in winter when we turn on the heating and the dry air becomes noticeable. This is when we will appreciate the device called a humidistat.
What exactly is a humidistat?
A hygrostat is used to monitor indoor air humidity. This is a device that checks whether the air is not too dry and, if necessary, turns the air humidifier on or off. You don't have to wonder whether the room is too dry or too humid – the humidistat will do it for you. All we need to do is set the desired humidity level.
It works in this way: the device's sensors examine the water content in the air. When the humidity drops below the set level (usually between 40 and 60%), the humidistat will signal the humidifier to turn on. Once the air is humid enough, it will turn it off.
Where can we find it most often?
A humidistat is now standard in better humidifiers and air dehumidifiers. We can also find it in home stations weather and modern ventilation systems. It also appears more and more often in smart home systems, where it can cooperate with other devices.
Two types to choose from
There are two types of humidistats on the market:
Mechanical – they work a bit like old thermometers. They use materials that react to moisture, changing their properties. They are cheaper, but less precise – they can be wrong by up to 10%.
Electronic – that newer technology. They are more accurate and the margin of error is usually 2-3%. They can often be connected to your phone and controlled via an app. They cost more, but it's worth paying extra for this convenience.
If we are sure that the humidity is appropriate, we will avoid health problems. So if you plan to buy an air humidifier that will monitor everything without your participation, look for devices equipped with a humidistat.
