This pleases experts because it means that public awareness of the problem is growing. However, as they say, there is still a lot to do.

Precisely because more and more people know that it is possible to overcome a mental health crisis. It is being said more and more loudly that there is an effect. – The system has started working, which means that young people are getting help – notes Dr. Halaszka Witkowska from the Polish Suicidological Society.

Comparing 2023 and 2024, the number of suicides among children and adolescents under 19 years of age decreased by over 12 percent. This trend has been visible for two years now.

– Even if it was one suicide, it will always be one too many – says Paulina Piechna- Więckiewicz, deputy minister of national education.

Standards of care and special educational videos

Schools are a very important element of the entire system that looks after the mental health of young people. That's why the Ministry of National Education sent teachers standards of care for people in suicide crisis.

However, while there are fewer suicides, the number of suicide attempts by children and adolescents exceeded 2,000 last year. Experts, however, say that the trend is slowing down, because this is the second time in a row an increase by 3 percent, and not by over 80 percent, as was the case in the past. .

– We should also assume an increase in awareness that people report calling help lines – notes Dr. Halaszka Witkowska.

In order to recognize the first symptoms of depression, but also to better understand yourself, your friend, your child or your student, the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital in Gdańsk has prepared a series of educational films. – In such a short version, i.e. 15 minutes, so that they can be used well during educational hours – says Anna Czarnowska, press secretary of the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital in Gdańsk.

The videos are available on the Internet and anyone can learn more about anxiety or depression from them. – Unfortunately, there are no conversations at home, and when they do, they are very limited.
