Some 3.2 million phone numbers and WhatsApp user IDs in Belgium have been put up for sale on a dark web forum, raising the risk of various cyberattacks, including financial fraud, the Brussels Times reported on Thursday.
The data theft was detected by Safeonweb, an initiative run by the Belgian Cybersecurity Center. The dark web, unlike the open web, allows users to hide their identity. As a result, the dark web is a hotbed of illegal activity.
As reported by the Brussels Times, the data is bought and sold and then used to attack people via smishing, which are fake text messages (SMS) intended to deceive recipients, or vishing, another form of phishing via telephone call.
A call to remain vigilant
Safeonweb urged WhatsApp users to remain vigilant when receiving calls or messages from unknown numbers.
Unexpected requests for information should be treated with suspicion and no sensitive data should be shared online. If a phishing incident is suspected, users should contact their bank to stop any fraudulent transfers and also inform the police.
