Social networking site X has revealed the latest version of its regulations, which is to enter into force on November 15. One change caught particular attention from users. As CNN writes, some people have already started removing their photos from the platform.
“By uploading and publishing content (…), the user grants us an international, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to make it available,” we read in the platform's new regulations. According to CNN, what seemed particularly disturbing to many users was the provision that the materials posted on the website could be used “to train machine learning and artificial intelligence models, both generative and other types.”
Using already created content to train artificial intelligence has become crucial given the current, dynamic pace of development of this technology. However, the engineers' enthusiasm is not shared by platform users, especially artists and other people who use websites to promote their creative professional or hobby work. The content they create would be used to develop artificial intelligence, which over time could largely replace human creators.
Internet users who post private photos or memories on the Internet are also concerned. “Some people already admit that they have started removing their photos from their profiles,” CNN points out.
Controversy
Platform X's chat, Grok, has already been the subject of controversy. There have been accusations of spreading information about the 2024 elections by generating false, often offensive images of famous politicians. CNN notes that Grok is no exception here, and similar accusations were also made against Google and Microsoft chatbots.
Just recently, X representatives declared that posts from private accounts would not be used to train the Grok algorithm. However, the new regulations do not contain any mention of different types of accounts.
Currently, users can choose not to allow the algorithm to be trained using the materials they provide. It is not known whether this option will appear in the November update.
Giants with problems in Europe
Since the beginning of October, Meta has made its free chatbot available, among others, in Great Britain. For now, however, it is not available in European Union countries due to the strict regulations that apply to artificial intelligence there.
Recently, Apple unveiled its latest iPhone 16 with artificial intelligence features. However, AI technology will not reach Europe. Apple explained that it was prevented from doing so by the provisions of the EU's Digital Markets Pact (DMA).
