USA: Why Kamala Harris? Three Issues That Give Her an Edge Over Other Potential Candidates

Joe Biden withdrew from his bid for a second term as president on Sunday evening USA. Some Democratic Party donors and politicians have been calling on him to take this step for weeks. Biden has named former Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement. However, this does not mean that she is officially the nominee, as the final decision will be made at the Democratic convention in late August.

As Michał Sznajder from TVN24 BiS reported while in Washington, after this decision, voices of support for Kamala Harris began to flow in almost immediately.

He pointed out that the American media noted that “Harris almost immediately began to gain the support of delegates.” “She and her people began to gain the support of people whose vote would be decisive,” he reported. He explained that the delegates, representing elections citizens made in the primaries, gather at a convention and their votes are counted.

The journalist reported that in the Democratic Party primaries already held, Joe Biden won about 90 percent of support among all delegates. – But now he has withdrawn and Kamala Harris does not receive this support automatically, he emphasized. That is why the likely candidate was supposed to call personally to talk to delegates.

– It may be a detail, but it shows that Kamala Harris does not want to give the impression that she has been nominated; that Joe Biden has nominated her and now she automatically becomes a candidate and perhaps president in the United States. That would be frowned upon – said Sznajder. He noted that in Sunday's statement she also emphasized that she wants to “deserve” the nomination. – It is a nuance, but an extremely important one – he said.

Sznajder noted that with the current president's decision, new information has emerged regarding the financing of the Democratic campaign. As he said, the entity collecting this money has amassed a “staggering amount” in a short time. Within seven hours of the resignation, small donors deposited almost $47 million into the accounts of the nonprofit fundraising organization ActBlue for the Democratic Party.

What if someone else from the Democratic party wanted to take on Donald Trump? If not Harris, then who?

As Sznajder admitted, others “may have such ambitions”, but he noted that “entering the competition now would be extremely difficult”.

– I talked about the fact that Kamala Harris started calling and contacting delegates. And why could she do that? Because she knows who the delegates are. She has access to the database, she knows who was nominated or designated to vote for Joe Biden during the convention – he emphasized.

– We also have to remember that Kamala Harris is the default candidate. In the sense that everyone who voted for Joe Biden, everyone who gave money to Joe Biden, de facto gave money to her, voted for her, too – he said. This is because they were a kind of “duet” or “political offer”, and everyone who voted for Biden implicitly agreed that Harris would become vice president.

– Another issue is that she has access to money that was intended for Joe Biden. The latest financial report speaks of over $90 million. This could not be automatically transferred to anyone else – Sznajder pointed out.

– Giving this money to another candidate would perhaps be feasible, but it would be a matter of hard work by lawyers and a lot of time that would have to pass. And Democrats don't have much time – he added.
