Poland wants to focus on the wind. In the perspective of 15 years, we would obtain 18 gigawatts from wind energy, and the Prime Minister promises: Energy in Poland will therefore be cheaper. PGE concluded a contract with the Danish company ORSsted for the construction of the Baltica 2 great sea wind farm.

Polska Grupa Energetyczna and the Danish company ORsted will start building the Baltica 2 wind farm in the Baltic Sea. – Here all the numbers make a really impressive impression. This is something that actually exceeds the current measures and ideas about wind farms. We are talking about the largest turbines in the world. We are talking about the future of Polish energy – says Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Baltica 2 is to start supplying electricity in 2027 and will have a power of nearly 1500 MW. – It will provide energy for 2.5 million households. This is almost 3 percent of the demand for electricity in our country – says Janusz Gajowiecki, president of the Polish Wind Energy Association.

The wind farm will be built in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea between Ustka and Choczew. 107 turbines will be placed on an area of 190 square kilometers. Each with a power of 14 MW.

– The foundation of each turbine weighs about 2,000 tons. For me, the reference point to the height is the Palace of Culture, because it was the highest building in Poland for decades, and each of these towers is 20 meters higher than the Palace of Culture – introduces Dariusz Marzec, president of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna.

“Investment not only on a Polish scale”

Four transformer stations will be built at sea, and in the port in Ustka an operational and service base. This is where constant technical supervision over sea wind farms will take place. – We are increasing the territory of Poland and the area of Gdańsk by 21 hectares, implementing this project – emphasizes Dariusz Marzec.

Baltica 2 is the largest investment in the Polish power sector so far. It will cost about PLN 30 billion, and the partners will provide financing in equal proportions.

– This project is the result of strong cooperation between companies that are leaders in their sectors. It fits into the green transformation of Poland and energy independence. Thanks to it, security wins, they win prosperity and climate – says Jakob Henningsem, the Ambassador of Denmark in Poland.

The electricity flow is expected in the first half of 2027. – This is an investment not only on a Polish scale, but a transformation of the entire European Union. We are talking about an investment that will be a pillar of the energy transformation of our country – indicates Janusz Gajowiecki.

Baltic Power is getting closer

Earlier, in 2026, the Baltic Power maritime wind farm, created in cooperation with the Orlen Group and the Canadian company Northland Power, will be put into service. Its target power is nearly 1.2 GW. – It is able to secure electricity for about 1.5 million average households – emphasizes Piotr Ostrowski, deputy director of the Baltic Power project.

As part of this investment, two power stations have already been built. – Each weighs 1,300 tons, has dimensions of 20 out of 20 out of 20, jokingly called houses by some. I always say, well, nice house, 1300 tons, and in the middle a very complicated structure – emphasizes Adam Kowalski, president of the Baltic industrial group.

Work on these elements of the wind farm lasted two years. There were 400 people at the peak of it. Both power stations have just sailed to Denmark, where they will be properly equipped.

– Our Baltic Power project, in a way colloquially speaking, rubs the trails. He tracks the way to other projects, other developers. He shares this experience that we gain, we gain it together – says Kamil Kobyliński, a member of the board of Baltic Power.

Work on the new law

Much more efficient energy acquisition is to enable the government promised by the government to unlock wind energy on land, i.e. abolish the provisions introduced by Law and Justice, including, for example, reduce the required distance between the windmill and buildings.

– By 2040, it is not such a distant perspective at all, we think about 18 gigawats from the wind. It is as if we produced as much electricity from the wind as four nuclear power plants – informs Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

It is not only about energy security, improvement of air quality, but also the competitiveness of Poland. – Today, the economies in the world compete with energy prices among themselves and in this geographical zone, in which Poland is located, the only way to reduce effective energy prices is the energy that flows from the wind – indicates Janusz Gajowiecki.

Last year, over 29 percent of the energy produced in Poland came from renewable sources. This is the highest share of renewable energy in the Polish energy mix in history, but the road is still far from the European lead.
