According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) in a statement, the potential transaction approved by the Department of State involves adapting Polish fighters to the latest version of Viper.
This is a modernization introduced in 2012, which includes, among others: advanced radar, improved on-board computer and avionics, guidance systems, electronic warfare systems and cockpit control panels. The estimated maximum price of the package is USD 7.3 billion.
US decision regarding F-16. The Polish fleet will be modernized
The head of the Armament Agency, General Artur Kuptel, said in February that the Polish armed forces intend to modernize the F-16 fleet due to reaching the “middle stage of the life cycle”. The first of 48 F-16s were delivered to Polish in 2006, and the estimated life cycle of these machines is approximately 40 years.
The manufacturer of the F-16 is Lockheed Martin, which assembles these aircraft at factories in Fort Worth, Texas and Greenville, South Carolina. Components for the F-16 are also produced, among others, by: at the PZL Mielec plant.
According to the DSCA announcement, the offset conditions will be determined in negotiations with the company.
