During the proceedings before the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), the tennis player proved that it was the result of taking a contaminated drug containing melatonin. This was confirmed by subsequent research. In this situation, Świątek was suspended only for a month. The level of the substance found was absolutely trace – 0.05 ng/ml.

On the day of publication of the announcement by ITIA, the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate (GIF) announced an inspection at LEK-AM, the manufacturer of the above-mentioned melatonin drug.

– So far, the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate has not received any reports of suspected quality defects regarding medicinal products of this entity containing the listed substances. We treat press reports as reporting a suspected quality defect in a medicinal product and we take actions, including an unannounced inspection at the place where the product is manufactured, to confirm or exclude a quality defect, the state institution said in a statement.

A few days ago, we learned the results of the inspection carried out at GIF. Sport.pl was informed about them directly by LEK-AM. It was reported that the inspectors did not notice any quality defect in the product.

– We were absolutely sure that the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate would confirm in its inspection that our medicine meets the highest quality standards and does not pose a threat to health or life in any way. We put patient safety first. Melatonin LEK-AM 1 mg is a drug that is safe for patients' health – Danuta Hanna Jakubowska, the company's spokeswoman, told us.

GIF comments on the results

The Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate itself did not publish any announcement regarding the final results of the inspection. So we asked the institution's press office to comment on the completed research.

– We would like to inform you that on November 29 and December 2, 2024, an unannounced inspection took place at Przedsiębiorstwo Farmaceutyczne LEK-AM in Zakrętym, carried out by manufacturing inspectors of the Main Pharmaceutical Inspectorate. The findings of the inspection did not indicate any quality defect in the medicinal product melatonin LEK-AM, 1 mg tablet – we read in the response sent to us.

This is the end of the proceedings regarding the melatonin drug, which was the cause of Iga Świątek's positive anti-doping result. As for the tennis player herself, she still has to wait for a possible cancellation.

On November 29, when issuing the judgment, ITIA indicated in its report that an appeal to the second instance – the Court of Sport in Lausanne – may be filed by the Polish Anti-Doping Agency (POLADA) and the World Anti-Doping Agency. The former did not decide to appeal, and had the right to do so until December 31.

WADA still has time

The WADA deadline for submitting an appeal runs from the beginning of January. The organization has 21 days to do so. We asked a WADA spokesman whether they would decide to appeal or not. – The decision has not been made yet – the case is still under consideration – James Fitzgerald told Sport.pl.

If the World Anti-Doping Agency follows the POLADA route and does not appeal against the ITIA verdict, the Iga Świątek case will end on January 22. Our tennis player was suspended until December 4. Thanks to this, he can now play in the Grand Slam Australian Open without any problems.
