The first weeks of 2025 brought a heat wave in central and northern Argentina. In the capital of the country, Buenos Aires, thermometers have been showing values above 30 degrees Celsius in recent days. Meteorological services are considering introducing a heat emergency.
Extremely high temperatures particularly affect the northern regions of Argentina. Residents of these areas face heat of up to 40 degrees. It is also exceptionally hot in the center, where thermometers showed around 38 degrees Celsius. The services appeal to residents to drink large amounts of fluids, refrain from demanding activities and avoid long stays outdoors.
“It's terrible, I tell you.”
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) announced that long-term high temperatures may lead to the declaration of a heat wave emergency.
– A heat wave occurs when extreme temperatures last longer than three consecutive days. It's not only about maximum temperatures, but also about minimum temperatures, emphasized Cinda Fernandez, SMN spokeswoman.
– It's terrible, I tell you […] I have to shower three or four times a day, said Luis Ardura, a 50-year-old car wash employee.
According to forecasts, in the coming days the temperature in Argentina will remain normal or will be higher than average.
