Katarzyna Grochola doesn't need any introduction. There are certainly people among the readers who are familiar with at least one of her books. The writer recently gave an interview to Wysokie Obcasy, in which she opened up about illness, faith, and transience. Grochola is struggling with cancer. As she says, she has relied on God and doctors for care. The author of social novels in a candid conversation recalled her youth, when she worked in a hospital as a nurse. “I accompanied dying people, I saw believers and non-believers passing away,” she said. The writer admitted that she was actually baptized only at the age of 21. “Our parents didn't baptize us. It was the 1950s, Gomułka, the new Poland. Maybe they wanted to give us some freedom of choice?” she explained. It didn't affect her relationship with God in any way, which is very strong. “My faith is absolutely unwavering. I simply know that God exists,” she said. Grochola later recalled her first job, where as a nurse she often accompanied dying patients. “I hoped that if I sat down with them, they wouldn't die. I believed I had that power. I saw something leaving their body. Maybe I'm confusing it with muscle tension, but the soul was simply there. And then it was gone,” she said.

“But that has absolutely nothing common with God!” she began. Later, she quoted an anecdote about a priest who made the matter very clear. “Kasia, and when you go to a doctor who makes a wrong diagnosis, do you look for another one? Do the same with the priest,” he explained to the writer. Grochola revealed that she has several problems with the institution of K.The author openly admitted that she would like “pedophile priests and priests who broke the law in any way to be held accountable for it like any other citizen.” At the end, she issued a short appeal. “I would like people to understand that the fight for the Church is not a fight against the Church,” she explained.
