Due to the wave of fires in Los Angeles and the surrounding area, it was decided to delay the announcement of nominations for this year's Oscars by two days. Many members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences live in fire areas.
On Wednesday at At 9:00 a.m., voting began for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the productions that will compete for the most important awards in the industry – the Oscars. It was supposed to last until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, and the nominations themselves were to be officially announced on Friday, January 17. However, this will not happen. The Hollywood Reporter obtained the content of the message that Bill Kramer, director of the Academy, sent to almost 10,000 of its members.
Oscars delayed due to fires
“We want to extend our deepest condolences to those affected by the devastating wildfires in Southern California. So many of our members and colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you,” he wrote.
The Academy decided to give members more time and extend the voting period by two days. It will end on Tuesday, January 14 at 17:00. Therefore, the date of announcing the nominations will also be delayed – they will be announced two days later than planned, on Sunday, January 19. This year's 97th gala Oscars is to take place on March 2 (in Poland it will be the night of March 2-3).
Due to the fires, a number of other events scheduled for the next few days, which were to be held in Los Angeles, have been postponed or canceled. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures remains closed on Wednesday and Thursday.
Wildfires in Los Angeles began spreading on Tuesday evening local time. Thousands of people had to evacuate, many of them losing their homes. There are also stars among them. Actor James Woods talked about the evacuation on his street on CNN. According to media reports, the house belonging to the acting couple Leighton Meester and Adam Brody, as well as the estate of Paris Hilton, also burned down. They had to evacuate from their homes, among others. Jamie Lee Curtis, Mandy Moore and Maria Shriver.
