Alejandro Arcos, the mayor of Chilpancingo, Mexico, was brutally murdered just six days after taking office. His body was found in a car left on one of the streets of the city, which is an arena of drug gang fights.

Alejandro Arcos was murdered on Sunday. His body with a severed head was found in the car in the passenger seat. Just six days earlier, Arcos had taken office as mayor of the city of Chilpancingo, with a population of 280,000, the capital of Guerrero state in southwestern Mexico.

The state is notorious for violent crime. In Chilpancingo, two drug gangs, Los Ardillos and Los Tlacos, have been fighting for territory for a long time. Three days before the mayor's murder, city government secretary Francisco Tapia was shot.

Arcos' murder outraged public opinion. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, like Arcos, commented on the matter on Monday she took up the position on October 1. She assured that the authorities were investigating and announced that she would present a crime-fighting strategy on Tuesday.
