Miley Cyrus accused of plagiarism over 2013 Bruno Mars song
Rolling Stone magazine reports that a lawsuit has been filed in a Los Angeles court against Miley Cyrusbut also to other co-authors of the song “Flowers” – Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack. The party in the case is Tempo Music Investments, which claims that the authors of “Flowers” copied several elements of Bruno Mars' 2013 piano ballad “When I Was Your Man”. Tempo Music Investments owns a percentage of the copyright to the aforementioned Mars song. The singer himself, as well as the other authors of “When I Was Your Man”, are not parties to the dispute. However, the lawsuit also names companies responsible for distributing “Flowers”, such as Sony Music Publishing, Apple, Target, Walmart.

After a cursory listen, it's hard to find any similarities between the two songs. However, the lawsuit claims that “Flowers” duplicates numerous harmonic, lyrical and melodic elements.“As any fan of Bruno Mars' 'When I Was Your Man' knows, Miley Cyrus' 'Flowers' didn't achieve all of its success on its own. 'Flowers' replicates many of the melodic, harmonic and lyrical elements of 'When I Was Your Man,' including the melodic pitch design and the verse progression that combines the bassline, some chorus bars, some theatrical elements, lyrical elements and specific chord progressions,” the lawsuit says. The amount of damages is also set to be determined at trial. Miley Cyrus' representatives were contacted by Variety for comment on the matter. However, no response has been provided at this time.. Bruno Mars, who is currently promoting a new song recorded in a duet with Lady Gaga.
