89 percent of people in the world support concern for the climate, the environment, the air we breathe, our forests, rivers and animals. This is a huge, though recently silent majority. On the International Earth Day, we give the voice to those who do not say so much, but do something to protect this environment.
Depressing reports regarding a climate disaster, unfortunately, there are too much. The International Earth Day falling on April 22 is to be a positive holiday. This year it is organized under the slogan “Our power. Our planet”.
For ecologists, a great challenge is to fight oil leaks to the seas and oceans. Now a quick response to a potential disaster will be facilitated by artificial intelligence – Norwegian engineers have developed a radar that allows you to quickly detect contamination and assess its size.
– We know that oil or oil smooth the surface of water. Wrinkles created by the wind disappear. Our radar and software can detect this characteristic, flat surface of water – says Marius Five Aarset, engineer, executive director of the Miros Group.
The 24 -hour, precise monitoring prevents the expansion of possible pollution. The software also has additional functions.
– Artificial intelligence not only detects the presence of oil, but also with high accuracy predicts which direction and what speed the stain will move. For example, we know what force he will hit the boat or quay – indicates Marius Five Aarset.

New technologies are not always needed
The effects of a climate disaster force people to look for solutions that will allow you to survive. The latest technologies are not always needed for this.
An example of a quiet revolution: in several towns in central Kenya residents began to establish banks of local seeds, because globally grown plants do not cope with an extremely dry climate.
– Even if local plants give lower yields than commercial, global species, they are better for us. They are more resistant to drought. They give yield more often. We do not have to use chemical abuse. In the overall bill, they cost less and require less work – indicates Martha Wangui, who cultivates local plant species in Kenya.
The idea was born of hunger. Farmers learn from each other how to grow long -forgotten, local plants, how to obtain and store their seeds. After a few years, the inhabitants became more and more independent – rising prices of grains, and even drought, no longer have to mean hunger.
Silent majority
In grassroots initiatives for environmental protection, sometimes it is really easy to get involved. Liesl Clark, who lived over the Pacific in the west of the United States, could not stand the view of rubbish piling up on the beach. She understood that excessive consumerism was guilty. As part of the “Buy Nothing” project or “Buy nothing”, she began to encourage friends and neighbors to mention the necessary things.
She explained: Give something you no longer need and what can be useful to someone else. This is pure ecological saving.
– Write on the group what you need, and it may turn out that your neighbor has such a thing. People are involved because there is great strength in a common action – indicates Liesl Clark, creator of the “Buy Nothing” website.
We do not always realize this common strength. According to the Covering Climate Now media organization, up to 89 percent of us expect more decisive actions against the climate disaster. However, we are a silent majority. We mistakenly think that others do not want such activities.
