Leading Belarusian oppositionist Pavel Latushka has been named the winner of this year's renewed Lech Wałęsa Solidarity Prize, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced. The award will be presented during a ceremony on September 18.

As the ministry emphasizes, the award is granted by Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in recognition of the promotion and support of democratic values. “It was established in 2014, but was suspended after 2015,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.

Latushka sentenced to 18 years in prison

Paweł Łatuszka was, among others, an ambassador in the past Belarus in Poland, Minister of Culture and director of the Janka Kupala National Academic Theatre in Minsk.

In August 2020, he was dismissed from his post after publicly supporting the post-election protests in his country. He then joined the opposition Coordination Council. In March 2023, he was sentenced in absentia by a Minsk court to 18 years in prison.
