These letters to Santa Claus are heartbreaking because the residents of nursing homes are asking for either a lot – to end their suffering or health, or for very little – they lack a long-sleeved blouse, a pair of shoes or crayons. There are more and more letters every year. The campaign's social media profile includes instructions on how to prepare a package for a selected senior. You can also send a donation.

There are things that cannot even be put into packages from Santa Claus. – There was a request in the letters to end the suffering and for health. There are requests for the family we once lived with to remember us, says Robert Pawlak, vice-president of the Letters to Nicholas Foundation from DPS.

Fortunately, letters to Santa Claus written by residents of nursing homes in Łódź more often mention things that are much easier to complete. – Dear Santa, I will ask you for loose coffee and the book “The Little Prince” – Paulina Kowalik, a volunteer of the campaign, reads one of the letters. – These letters are so modest that they touch the heart – says Witold Michalak, president of the Letters to Nicholas Foundation from DPS.

Mrs. Anna says she would like to receive a large parcel. – I want a chain, tracksuit, trousers and socks from Santa Claus – says a resident of a nursing home in Łódź. Mrs. Agnieszka, a resident of the same Nursing Home, loves to draw. – I wrote a letter to Santa Claus, I want to have coloring books, I want to have crayons, markers – says the woman.

What else do the students dream about?

Mrs. Teresa asked for a crossword and something to write with. Shower gel, chocolate candies, coffee, tea, perfume and face cream were included in the letter from 77-year-old Mrs. Barbara. Mr. Zdzisław, who is four years younger, replaced his watches – wristwatches and wall watches, trousers and shoes. 83-year-old Mrs. Jadwiga is waiting for moisturizing wipes, sweets and a small blanket, and 76-year-old Mrs. Katarzyna noticed that she did not deserve a rod, but she would need a bathrobe.

– Jadwiga, 85. I have been in a nursing home for a year, I am lonely, my family is already in the other world, I am the only one left. I had no one to write to anymore, so all I had left was you – reads one of the letters Witold Michalak. – It is very often the case that people who are in DPS are not taken home by their families for the holidays, they stay there – points out Robert Pawlak.

Fulfilling written requests, or rather taking an interest in them, gives hope that someone is thinking about them. This is the fifth edition of the Łódź action. Each time there are more and more letters from residents of nursing homes. – In the first year, let me remind you, there were only 300 such letters, last year we had 1,200, this year we have over 1,600 of them per 2,000 inhabitants – says the vice-president of the Letters to Nicholas Foundation from DPS.

Anyone of us can prepare a package

Those who did not write the letter, either on their own or with the help of their guardians, will not be left with anything – they will receive a universal gift, just like the resident of the Nursing Home, who took part in the action, but had no special wishes.

– A lady who was in a concentration camp as a small child, then was a nurse, now is in a social welfare home, who only thanked us in the letter that we were here – explains Paulina Kowalik, a volunteer.

Mrs. Paulina has been a volunteer since the beginning of the campaign. Students and teachers from primary school no. 190 in Łódź also get involved. – From an early age, we can show children that it is worth helping, that good things come back, that we are not the only ones who can receive gifts – emphasizes Anna Sidor-Maj, coordinator of the School Volunteer Club at Primary School No. 190 in Łódź.

New lists continue to appear on the campaign's social media profile. There is also instructions on how to prepare a package for a selected senior. You can also send a donation. The last gifts will go to DPS residents on December 5.
