The Border Guard liquidated an illegal tobacco cutting plant in one of the towns near Sierpc.
The officers found significant amounts of dried tobacco and excise-free cut tobacco during the search of the house, utility rooms and car.
– The officers seized a total of 8,804 kg of dried tobacco packed in 76 cartons and 5 bags containing 76 kg of cut tobacco – said the spokesman for the Bug River Border Guard Unit, Capt. Dariusz Sienicki. He added that if tobacco were put on sale, the state treasury would lose PLN 6 million.
The property owners were detained
He informed that during the search, the officers also found a tobacco cutting machine, a shredder, a scale and other devices used for the production of cut tobacco. During the proceedings, the Border Guard detained the owners of the property.
Border Guard officers from Chełm, Elbląg and the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Customs and Tax Office in Toruń participated in the search. Further proceedings in this matter are being conducted by the National Tax Administration.
Purchasing, storing, transporting, sending and carrying illegal tobacco products, as well as assisting in their sale or concealment, is punishable by up to 3 years in prison.
