Maksymilian S., 20, who is suspected of murdering a 23-year-old from Gdańsk on a platform in Sopot, was jailed for three months. According to investigators, the man pushed the injured man in front of an oncoming train. The 23-year-old died on the spot. The arrested man does not admit guilt and claims it was an accident.
Prosecutor Mariusz Duszyński from the District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk said late Sunday afternoon that 20-year-old Maksymilian S., who has been charged with the murder of a 23-year-old resident of Gdańsk, has been arrested for three months. The District Court in Sopot ended the detention hearing in his case before 6 p.m. The prosecutor's office accused him of murdering the 23-year-old by pushing him directly under a moving train on a long-distance platform in Sopot.
– Our client denies the charges brought by the prosecutor's office. He provided explanations in which he stated that it was an unfortunate accident. We will certainly complain about the court's decision to temporarily arrest him – said Maksymilian S.'s defense attorney, attorney Błażej Haber, adding that he will apply for the classification of the act to be changed from murder to causing death by negligence.
Death on the tracks
On Saturday (17th August) at around 5.30 am, Sopot police were notified about a person hit by a train. The incident occurred on a long-distance platform.
Deputy Commissioner Lucyna Rekowska, spokeswoman for the City Police Commander in Sopot, said that police officers from the investigation group worked on site under the supervision of a prosecutor and with the participation of a forensic physician.
– In connection with the case, the intervening police officers detained a 20-year-old resident of Gdynia, who was directly involved in this tragic event. He was drunk, and a breathalyzer showed 1.8 per mille of alcohol in his blood – the policewoman said. The man was taken to the Sopot police station, where he sobered up.
The police found marijuana in aluminum foil on the arrested Gdynia resident. At the time of arrest, he was aggressive and was overpowered by firefighters who were the first to arrive at the scene of the tragedy. They were later helped by police officers.
On Sunday, the 20-year-old was brought to the prosecutor's office. Journalists managed to ask him why he did it. “I didn't do it, I didn't want to,” he replied. “I didn't want to,” he repeated a moment later.

“Right in front of the train”
Earlier, the driver and the manager of the train that fatally hit the 23-year-old were questioned. – The tragic event took place in the morning hours and there were not many witnesses on the platform. Investigators secured the recording of monitoring from the station and the locomotive. The injured person fell directly under the train – described prosecutor Duszyński.
TVN24 reporter Marta Ulatowska-Jesse reported that the train crew tried to stop him. – The train was too close and the 23-year-old died on the spot – she added.
