Prigozhin, who also owns a large media empire and enjoys the support of quite a few radical pro-war circles in Russia, began to criticize the Ministry of Defense and express his political ambitions. On June 24, 2023, his mercenaries de facto occupied the city of Rostov-on-Don and then began the “march on Moscow”, without encountering any resistance along the way. Two days later, the march ended with an agreement with Putin, and the Wagnerites were to move to Belarus. Two months later, Prigozhin died in a plane crash, which many analysts saw as revenge for the rebellion.

The BBC, citing analysts' opinions, writes that within a year the Russian regime effectively “disbanded and replaced” the Wagner Group. Dr. Sorcha MacLeod, a member of the UN working group on mercenaries and a lecturer at the University of Copenhagen, says Wagner Group troops were scattered across Russia.
