The 86-year-old tailor Raniero Mancinelli is preparing a cassock for the new pope. As he said, he must sew her in three sizes. Mancinelli sews outfits for clergy for 70 years.
Key facts:
- The new pope will be elected to the conclave starting on May 7.
- The cassock for the successor of Franciszek sews Raniero Mancinelli.
- The tailor told what he would look like.
A small tailor plant, which Raniro Mancinelli leads with his family, is located in the street of Borgo Pio, a few steps from Saint Peter's Square.
– To sew a cassock for the pope you need about five meters of fabric, because there is also a cape. The fabric I used this time is a light wool weighing 220 grams per square meter – explained the papal tailor, quoted by the Ansa agency. He added that he also had a cassock from such a fabric Pope Francis.

“This is not a very noble material, but pure Italian wool,” Mancinelli added, reminding that, according to the requirements, the cassock will have 33 buttons that correspond to the years of Christ's life. – Recently, we have reduced this number a bit so that it can be easier to wear and take it off – he admitted.
The tailor pointed out that sewing the papal cassock lasts five or six days. – I have to sew three cassocks: small in size 48-50, average 54 and large 58 – he emphasized.
The new pope will find three cassocks in the sacristy of the Sistine Chapel, called the “room of tears” right after the election, due to the fact that it was there that the moment of emotion occurs by the conclave decision.
He dressed three popes
– I worked for the last three popes. Francis wanted very simple, practical things, without decorations. Benedict liked more noble, more beautiful and soft fabrics. He dressed elegantly. John Paul II He was like Francis. He told me: “Use a fabric that you think will be good for me,” said Krawiec, who has been sewing out their costumes for clergy for 70 years.
The conclave, which is to choose a new pope after Francis' death, will start on May 7. 133 cardinals will participate in it.
